In 1918 the Mikhailovsky Theatre was reopened as an Opera House with the production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In 1930s the theatre got the nickname of the ‘laboratory of the Soviet opera.’ It was the Leningrad Maly Opera House that saw world premieres of The Nose by Shostakovich and War and Peace by Prokofiev. Today it’s the St Petersburg Opera and Ballet Theatre that boasts huge opera repertory and the productions by the best Russian and European stage directors.
