Andrejs Žagars is staging Un ballo in maschera
On July, 21 and 23 Giuseppe Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera premieres at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. Stage Director Andrejs Žagars, General Director of the Latvian National Opera, is commenting on the concept of the production.

“The production accentuates the love story, the relationship between three main characters, their tragedy, and not the political conflict. The problems of the power and freedom of conscious are just a background for the human story. The plot is set in the early 20th century, before WWI, when the whole Europe was faced with a monarchy crisis. There was an alternative — to keep to the historic details and to show the story of Gustav III of Sweden. However, we reject the decorativeness of Baroque style. To my mind, such an interpretation confuses both the director and the public who might be led astray both by the historical details and the entourage.
In our production the revolutionary spirit of the turn of the centuries stresses the main conflict — Verdi himself was a revolutionary!

The tragic relationship of Renato, Gustav and Amelia shouldn’t be called just passion, that would have been too easy. Their feelings are like some overwhelming, supernatural power that can’t be opposed to. On one hand this is a great happiness, on the other hand this is a curse ruining both moral and life.”
