The press enthusiastically praised ‘the plausible noble but gloomy image of the Countess’ created by Elena Obraztsova. ‘The singer is a piece of art herself and draws attention of the public just appearing on the stage,’ commented Kommersant newspaper. ‘The role created by the singer became one of the best images of the Queen of Spades in the world theatre,’ Izvestia newspaper claimed. ‘The most impressive thing about Obraztsova as the Countess is the power of her influence on the public. The Queen of Spades is one of the best-known operas by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and is usually associated with the phenomenon of Russian operatic art. The opera entered the repertory of many theatres in Europe and America; it was produced in various versions and performed in different languages. The traditional production at the Mikhailovsky Theatre has always been popular with the public. On 18 June Elena Obraztsova will be partnered by Neil Shicoff who will star as Herman.
