The Queen of Spades starring Elena Obraztsova
On 18 June and 20 July the famous singer Elena Obraztsova will sing the role of the Countess in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades.


It has been her star role for many years: she made her debut in it at the Bolshoi Theatre at the age of 25 and later performed the role in different productions all around the world.

The press enthusiastically praised ‘the plausible noble but gloomy image of the Countess’ created by Elena Obraztsova. ‘The singer is a piece of art herself and draws attention of the public just appearing on the stage,’ commented Kommersant newspaper. ‘The role created by the singer became one of the best images of the Queen of Spades in the world theatre,’ Izvestia newspaper claimed. ‘The most impressive thing about Obraztsova as the Countess is the power of her influence on the public. One shivers on hearing the sepulchral intonations of her voice sounding as if from the lower world’, Gzt.ru wrote.

The Queen of Spades is one of the best-known operas by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and is usually associated with the phenomenon of Russian operatic art. The opera entered the repertory of many theatres in Europe and America; it was produced in various versions and performed in different languages. The traditional production at the Mikhailovsky Theatre has always been popular with the public.

On 18 June Elena Obraztsova will be partnered by Neil Shicoff who will star as Herman.
