Ivan Vasiliev, principal dancer at the Bolshoi Theatre:
“I always enjoy dancing at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. I like everything about how ballet is done here. It is an example of how something that for other theatres is an impossible dream can become a reality. My next performance here will be on 1 December — at the closing concert of the Mikhailovsky Theatre Grand Prix. This is the third show for students at schools of choreography, and I have taken part in the gala concert on each occasion. I am very glad of the opportunity not only to share a stage with the students, but also to mix with them as colleagues. Last year I enjoyed a tea with the competitors, recalling amusing incidents from school, amid much laughter; it was as if I had gone back to my own school days, though they weren’t actually that long ago. Holding a competition like this for students is an excellent idea. When you prepare for something, psych yourself up and go somewhere, meeting your peers from other cities — it’s great! It fills your orderly and fairly strict life at school with a special drive. And for the students, of course, it’s an opportunity to grow professionally. I can talk about this because my own competition experience also began at school. It’s very important and beneficial to have prominent masters assess your potential and to see what your contemporaries can do.”
