Slava Samodurov’s Ballet at the Mikhailovsky TheatreSlava Samodurov, a young choreographer and a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet Covent Garden, is staging a new ballet set to music by Domenico Scarlatti. The world premiere is to take place on July, 7. |
It’s the first grand piece choreographed by Samodurov in Russia. The idea of the ballet was born at London Heathrow Airport. ‘While waiting for the flight, I was listening in my iPod to a sonata by Scarlatti played by Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelić. Scarlatti’s music seems to leave no questions, but Pogorelić renders it in a different way, one can hear the melancholy given by repetitively of things, events, people — and I had a clear vision of time turned back on itself. London, a centre of brutal architecture and modern design, defined the stage design’.
In his work the choreographer cooperates with London designers. Set designer Christopher Faulds and lighting designer Simon Bennison materialize the idea when light, shadows, and sets work as a single mechanism. Hi-tech constructions, metallic nets and panels transform the stage space. Music feeds the movement like fuel; bright color spots define silhouettes and lines. Uncluttered costumes designed by Ellen Butler link the two epochs, accentuating sexuality and elegance of the dance.
