Première of the ballets by Nacho Duato
11, 18, 22 March
On 15 March the Triple Bill by Nacho Duato, Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky Ballet, received its première.

The ballet Nunc Dimittis created by the choreographer especially for the company, was presented together with two earlier one-act ballets, Without Words set to Schubert’s music and Duende set to music by Debussy, hailed as classics of contemporary choreography.

The idea of the ballet Nunc Dimittis set to Arvo Pärt’s music owes much to the impressions of the choreographer got at the Mikhailovsky Theatre. In his new creation Nacho Duato involved the Mikhailovsky Chorus — singing a cappella for about 7 minutes — and the unique set of bells belonging to the Mikhailovsky Theatre since the 19th century. Chorus singing, the sound of the bells and the lighting design contributed to the impression of ‘mystery and sacrament.’ The flavour of the music was conveyed by Ekaterina Borchenko, Andrey Kasyanenko, and Evgeny Deryabin, who danced the center roles of the new ballet.

The Triple Bill also featured Irina Perren, Leonid Sarafanov, Victoria Kutepova, Mikhail Sivakov, Olga Semyonova, Marat Shemiunov, and other dancers of the Mikhailovsky Ballet Company. Spaniard Pedro Alcalde conducted the three ballets.
