Première of Puccini’s opera La bohème
11, 13, 31 May 2011
In May the Mikhailovsky Theatre is presenting a new opera première — La bohème by Giacomo Puccini. The lyric music drama has few rivals in the world music repertory.

There are few productions in the world of opera that could compete with this lyrical drama. Delicate shades of elusive dreams, dissolving in the mists of cold Parisian nights, form the backdrop for this simple, and yet poignant love story. Retold in a wonderfully beautiful musical language, La bohème is capable of charming even the most stubborn viewers, who consider opera to be ‘not for them’. It is not pretentious, convoluted or emotional — here, the art of opera and the real world collide. The relationships between the main characters are woven into a colourful picture of the lives of Parisian bohemians, framed by details of everyday life and softened with jokes and subtle irony. The young residents of the Latin Quarter, devoted to art, dream of recognition and success, but life isn’t quick to meet their expectations. Anxious feelings, spontaneity, candour and affection fill Puccini’s music, which accompanies the touching, joyful and mournful events of the lives of the poor artists, poets and their girlfriends.
