Neil Shicoff in La Juive

On 25 and 30 October, the celebrated Neil Shicoff will be appearing in the season premiere of Fromental Halévy’s La Juive. St. Petersburg listeners are already well acquainted with his ‘classic’ interpretation of the role of Eléazar, which will only heighten interest and guarantee a full house for every performance.

The winner of the Golden Mask demonstrates outstanding vocal technique and enormous dramatic talent in his trademark role. In this opera, music critics claim that the American tenor “loves, mocks and suffers with his wonderful voice, which gives a distinctive colour to Shicoff’s acting”.

The role of Rachel will be sung by Maria Litke (25 October) and Tatiana Ryaguzova (30 October). Maria Litke’s dramatic soprano will accentuate Eléazar’s daughter's strength and decisiveness, while Tatiana Ryaguzova’s lyrical voice will express the character’s feminine side. Svetlana Moskalenko and Natalia Mironova will each appear as Princess Eudoxie. Alexey Tanovitsky will play Cardinal de Brogni, a character destined to make a fateful decision. On 25 October the role of Léopold, Rachel’s unfaithful lover, will be sung by the Italian tenor Gian Luca Pasolini, a singer our audience is already familiar with.

Fromental Halévy’s La Juive is one of the most complex works in the theatrical repertoire, in terms of both technique and psychology. It is aimed at an experienced theatregoer who can sympathize with the characters and appreciate the rich texture of the music. Only a group of outstanding singers, who also possess great acting talent, can bring to life the concept envisioned by the creators of this opera. We are confident that our cast will prove a success and that La Juive will be the theatrical highlight of the season in St. Petersburg this autumn.
