Marcelo Gomes will join the Mikhailovsky ballet as Guest Principal Dancer
This season, Marcelo Gomes performed at the Mikhailovsky Theatre several times: he took part in the Kings of the Dance program and in repertoire performances. A particular highlight was Swan Lake in April, 2012: Mr. Gomes performed as Prince Siegfried, when Natalia Osipova chose him as her partner for her debut as Odette-Odile. Vedomosti noted that “he has completed the task impeccably”, confirming his reputation as “the ABT’s main star”… “He reveals his ‘princely nature’ with his soft pace, coordination of dance and gesture, and effortless technique, excluding even the thought of trick demonstration. When the ballerina appears… he turns into an irreproachable and gallant partner, precisely according to Petipa’s aesthetics”.
The Guest Principal Dancer will appear on the stage of the Mikhailovsky Theatre on the opening night of the new season: on September 13, Mr. Gomes and Polina Semionova will dance the leading roles in Giselle; the next performance of the star duet will take place on September 15.
Marcelo Gomes, Guest Principal Dancer at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Principal Dancer at the American Ballet Theatre: “For me, being a native of Brazil who was trained in Paris and the United States, it’s a tremendous honor to be a part of a theatre like the Mikhailovsky, which preserves and develops the Russian classical ballet tradition so excellently. The atmosphere there is truly inspiring, and the company is constantly striving to reach new heights. I felt immediately accepted with great warmth and hospitality, and continue to feel the company’s friendly support. I’m looking forward to working at the Mikhailovsky Theatre again, and am certain this will be an incredible experience for me, both artistically and personally”.
Kevin McKenzie, American Ballet Theatre’s Artistic Director: “I am pleased to know that an ABT Principal Dancer will share his artistry with Mikhailovsky Ballet as a guest principal. With this opportunity, Marcelo Gomes can not only demonstrate his own artistry, but gain valuable insight into the work and style of Mikhailovsky Ballet. We value the opportunity for our artists to experience working with different companies and choreographers, as it serves to broaden their own experience and thereby, expands the field”.
Nacho Duato, Artistic Director of the Mikhailovsky ballet: “Marcelo Gomes is without any doubt an outstanding dancer, I have had the great pleasure of working with him. Today I can sincerely name him as one of the world’s most bright and notable dancers. I am sure that this cooperation will be interesting for our company and for the dancer himself, and productions with the participation of Mr.Gomes will truly please the audience”.
