On 18 March the opera will be presented in the framework of the Golden Mask Theatre Festival, on 22 March it’ll open the Bosco di Ciliegi Festival. The renowned tenor Neil Shicoff, hailed as the best Eléazar, who was nominated for the highest national theatre awards for the role performed at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, will star in the both Moscow performances of La Juive. The Moscow première also features the soloists of the Mikhailovsky Theatre Tatiana Ryaguzova (as Rachel) and Natalia Mironova (nominated for the Golden Mask awards in the category Best Female Opera Role); the Dutch bass-baritone Harry Peeters will appear as de Brogni, Gian Luca Pasolini will appear as Léopold. On 11 March in St Petersburg Avgust Amonov will perform the role of Eléazar. Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre Peter Feranec gathered the unique ensemble of singers, who convey the passion and ardor of Halévy’s music. On 11 March in the framework of the Lectures Before the Performance cycle Vsevolod Bogatyryov will lecture on the history and specifics of the opera La Juive. The public will know the uneasy fate of the masterpiece of grand style of the early 19th century, e.g. the reasons why it was banned from the Russian stage for many decades. The lecturer will tell about the details of the première in 1835 — when 20 horses appeared on stage, real fountains played in Act II, and the luxurious costumes after the sketches based on the Old Masters paintings were made of Florentine and Venetian fabrics. It’ll be of great interest to compare the luxury of the 19th century to the concept by French Stage Director Arnaud Bernard who adapted the arresting storyline to modern times. |
