Getting Closer to Romeo and Juliet

During the school holidays the Mikhailovsky Theatre will host a programme of lectures and excursions especially for the young performers of the Upsala Children’s Circus. The Upsala Circus is a project that uses circus training to help children and adolescents from social risk groups to integrate into society.

On 02 November the youths from the Upsala Circus will visit our theatre for the first time, and this will mark the beginning of a special educational programme.

The Upsala Circus performers are children who come from difficult backgrounds. Art is a powerful source of emotional experience and joy and, as Twyla Tharp once said, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home”. The Mikhailovsky Theatre is inviting them to set off on a fantastic journey to medieval Verona, where they will learn about the story of eternal love as told by William Shakespeare and by Oleg Vinogradov, who has choreographed the latest version of Romeo and Juliet.

The young people from the Upsala Circus will have the opportunity to get to know what goes on behind the scenes in the theatre. The programme will include trips backstage and lectures about great productions, as well as outstanding musicians and performers.
