On July, 9^th the part of Countess is to be sung by Elena Obraztsova.

The masterpiece of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, based on the novel in verse by Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, however, differs from the literature source: characters and their behavior, the course of action.

The Countess, who knows the ‘secret of the three cards’, dies because of it; Lisa, a relative of hers, commits suicide; Hermann’s obsession with learning the secret costs him his possessions, Lisa, and ultimately his own life.

The quote from the opera ‘Life is but a game’ became a proverb in Russian.
