31 December

A special New Year’s Eve gala concert will feature music by Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. It will be conducted by Vasily Petrenko, a world-renowned musician, whose career began at the Mikhailovsky Theatre.

Petrenko stands out as the leading young conductor of his generation. He has appeared at the world’s leading opera houses — the Paris Opera, the Zürich Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, as well as other prestigious international venues. In 2010 he won a Classical Brit Award, the ‘Oscar’ of classical music.

Several outstanding singers will be appearing with the orchestra on 31 December, including the legendary Sir Willard White , whose bass-baritone voice is known the world over, soprano Ailyn Pérez, winner of numerous opera competitions, tenor James Valenti, a guest soloist at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Deutsche Oper, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera, and Indira Mahajan, who has starred in Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess.

The gala-concert programme includes excerpts from the musicals West Side Story and On the Town, the opera Porgy and Bess, the operetta Candide, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings, George Gershwin’s symphonic poem An American in Paris, and his Cuban Overture.
