Stage Wigs for Opera

Your contribution to this programme will make the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s productions even brighter and more colourful, and will not go unnoticed by audiences.

The Mikhailovsky Theatre is renowned for its bright, colourful productions, which require many hours of work behind the scenes by make-up artists, costumiers and hair design specialists.

An artist’s wig is an integral part of his or her costume and plays an important part in creating a character’s image. Not everyone knows that making wigs is a very labour-intensive and expensive business. Only natural hair is used in top-class wigs, since artificial hair lies badly and looks worse.

The average cost of a wig is between 10,000 and 15,000 roubles. The Queen of Spades, La traviata, Eugene Onegin and Rusalka are just a few of the operas in which wigs are an integral part of the image of almost every member of the cast. Wigs do not last forever — they frequently need to be restored or replaced.
